Green Made Easy: The Everyday Guide for Transitioning to a Green Lifestyle

Green Made Easy is a simple-to-use guidebook offering tips on how to make the transition toward a healthy green lifestyle one step at a time. Chris Prelitz has been passionately committed to green living and sustainability for more than 25 years. He and his wife, Becky, share a green solar-powered home in Laguna Beach, California, which Chris designed and built. Most months they produce more energy than they use and receive a credit from their power company instead of a bill.  Below (and in the book) Chris enlightens us about what it means to live green:

How is this Green book different from other green books?

I have been doing the work of Green remodeling and design for over 20 years. My work is “deep green”… you might even say emerald green. There is a lot of Green washing out there. Chemical companies falsely advertising that they are green and I am here to educate people about the simple and practical things we can do right now to make their homes safer and better for the planet. I also teach the general public how they can make money and save the environment by going green. It is as simple as behavior changes which are free, to spending a few hundred dollars to literally save thousands of dollars a year and save our planet for generations to come.

Chris, the book says you can save money and the environment at the same time.  Please explain.

There are lots of things you can do that literally don’t cost a dime. The best investment you can make is just putting a little time into having new habits:

  • When you leave a room, turn the light off.
  • Defrost frozen foods in the refrigerator so that the cold from the frozen item will help cool the refrigerator and won’t use hot water, which takes gas.
  • Another thing is the dishwasher.  It’s better to think about having a full load instead of running it all the time with smaller loads.
  •  On drying clothes, clean that lint trap every time before you do it, because if that’s clogged up, it’s harder for the machinery to pump the hot air through, so it has to run more.
  • Use cold water in the washing machine. Add a cup of Baking soda to your eco friendly laundry detergent. It gets clothes just as clean when you have the right detergents. The clothes’ colors stay a lot stronger, the clothes last longer, and most importantly, it uses a lot less energy.
